2005 Program

This year's Science Horizons students were given the opportunity to explore engineering, food science, and food chemistry. They learned about animal anatomy and animal husbandry and got a behind-the scenes look at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.

The students were also introduced to the basic tools for understanding the science of fire, visited the Upstate Medical Center's OR and ER, and participated in water tests at Upstate Freshwater Institute. Their other activities during Science Horizons week included studying fossils and learning about aviation, rockets, and satellite imaging.

The following comments were shared by the students who participated in this year's program.

Regarding their visit to Upstate Medical Center's ER:
"I learned what trauma means and what a patient has to go through in these situations."
"I learned about all of the procedures you have to go through when you are admitted to the ER and what they must do in certin situations."

Regarding the subject of Food Science:
"I learned that baking powder has baking soda in it."
"I learned how yeast makes break rise."
"I learned that fudge is really easy to make."

Regarding the subject of Rockets:
"I learned about orbital velocity, microgravity and Newton's 3rd law."
"I learned the 3 physics principles for building rockets."

Regarding the Science of Fire:
"I learned how thermal sensors can help find trapped victims."
I learned about the 4 elements a fire needs and the different ways to put them out."

Regarding their visit to Exec Air:
"I learned about the forces that act on a plane."
"I learned how planes fly and the forces that act upon it. I also learned the different parts and instruments of a plane."
"I learned so much and the flight simulator was cool."
